The Curious, Skeptical, & Confused
WEEK 01
Key Concept:
Three Types of Questions:
Clarifying Questions: “What do you mean by that?”
Leading Questions: “Have you considered...?”
Revealing Questions: “Why do you think that is?”
Example from Jesus: Who do you say that I am- Matthew 16:13-16
Curious
Definition: Interested in spirituality or religion, and possibly Christianity, but unsure.
Common Traits: Open to new ideas, asking questions about life’s purpose, exploring different beliefs.
Effective Questions:
“What do you find interesting about Christianity?”
“What kind of spiritual experiences have you had?”
What would make you want to follow Jesus? ○
Goal: Encourage exploration without overwhelming yourself with just information.
Skeptic
Definition: Views Christianity as unlikely and challenges its claims.
Common Traits: Values evidence, logic, and may be critical of faith-based claims.
Effective Questions:
“What evidence would make you reconsider your view on God?”
“How do you think about the idea of purpose and meaning in life?”
When and how did you come to that conclusion?
Goal: Use questions to open up space for reconsideration without being confrontational.
Confused
Definition: Has rejected Christianity due to misunderstandings or negative experiences.
Common Traits: Emotional hurt, frustration, or misinformation about Christian teachings.
Effective Questions:
“What has shaped your view of Christianity?”
“What do you think the Bible says about that?”
Would your views change if I could show you a different way
Goal: Provide clarity and empathy, addressing misconceptions gently.
Overview: Practice using questions in conversations with each type of person.
Activity:
Break into Small Groups (if possible) or use a large group format.
Assign Scenarios: Each group/person takes on the role of engaging a Curious, Skeptic, or Confused individual.
Sample Scenarios:
Curious: A friend who is attending church out of curiosity but isn’t sure if they believe.
Skeptic: A coworker who questions the reliability of the Bible.
Confused: A neighbor who left the church because of a negative experience and thinks Christians are judgmental.
Instructions:
Use questions to engage, listen, and guide the conversation. Focus on asking questions rather than providing all the answers.
