LENT
AT ALETHEIA
WHAT IS LENT?
Lent is a significant rhythm in the historical church calendar, observed for centuries. This 40-day period leading up to Resurrection Sunday invites Christ’s followers to pause, examine what we may be prioritizing above Jesus, and reorient our hearts toward Him. The ultimate goal is to recognize our desperate need for a Savior and King.
Lent mirrors Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness before His public ministry (Matthew 4), where He fasted and was tempted by the devil. It begins with Ash Wednesday, which falls on March 5th this year—a day of prayer, fasting, contemplation, and repentance. This tradition originates from the Old Testament practice of repentance, where people wore sackcloth and placed ashes on their heads as a reminder of human frailty: “For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Ashes symbolize mourning, repentance, and the reality of sin’s consequence—death—which is why many receive ashes on their foreheads as a sign of sorrow over sin and a longing for renewal.
Lent concludes on Holy Saturday, the day before Resurrection Sunday. While it is a season of reflection and repentance, it is ultimately marked by hope—the promise that Jesus conquered sin and death, proving His victory by rising from the grave to give us life!
At Aletheia, these 40(ish) days will be centered on Jesus. Each week will include a passage of Scripture to read and meditate on, a guided prayer, reflection questions, and a fasting focus—an intentional subtraction from daily life to create space for more of Jesus.
Our hope and prayer is that this season leading up to Resurrection Sunday will deepen your worship of Jesus as you experience your need for Him more profoundly.
