ADVENT at ALETHEIA
As the Christmas season begins, we invite you to slow down and reflect on the One at the center of it all — The Christ of Christmas.
Throughout this year’s four-week Advent series, we’ll ask the question, “Who is this Christ?” and discover together the beauty and depth of who He is:
The Ruling King who reigns with justice and peace
Immanuel, God with Us, who draws near in love
The Refiner and Purifier who transforms our hearts
The Righteous Branch, our Shepherd-King, who faithfully leads His people
Join us for Advent as we prepare our hearts to celebrate the coming of Jesus — the true hope and joy of Christmas.
WHAT IS ADVENT?
The Latin word Adventus means “arrival” or “coming” and early Christians spoke of “The advent of our Lord” in reference to the incarnation, where God became flesh. As time went on, Advent was designated as the period leading up to Christmas Day when Christians prepared for the celebration of Jesus’ birth. The specific celebrations began as early as the 4th century AD. This time period was marked by prayer and fasting with a focused attention on the wonder of the incarnation as well as the hopeful return of Christ at His second coming.
WHY DO WE CELEBRATE ADVENT?
We celebrate Advent because through it, we remember Christ’s first coming and what it took for mankind to be rescued from sin, death, and hell. This rescue required God to take on flesh and become a sacrifice for the sins of the entire world. Celebrating Advent is celebrating the hope of redemption. This hope came in the form of a baby who changed the world forever! His name is Jesus!
HOW IS ALETHEIA CELEBRATING ADVENT?
We’ll celebrate Advent together in our Sunday worship gatherings, special events, and through intentional resources designed to help you encounter Jesus in meaningful ways.
This year’s four-week Advent sermon series invites us to ask, “Who is this Christ?” Together, we’ll discover the beauty and depth of who He is:
The Ruling King who reigns with justice and peace
Immanuel, God with Us, who draws near in love
The Refiner and Purifier who transforms our hearts
The Righteous Branch, our Shepherd-King who faithfully leads His people
Each Sunday leading up to Christmas Eve, we’ll gather to sing, pray, and open God’s Word as we prepare our hearts to celebrate the coming of Jesus — the true hope and joy of Christmas. We’ll also enjoy special moments throughout December as a church family (see event calendar below), creating space to worship, reflect, and rejoice together.
To help guide you through this season, we’ve created two Advent resources for you and your family:
The Advent Guide: a simple daily devotional with Scripture readings, reflection questions, and a weekly song, movie, and activity to help you slow down and savor the season.
The Christmas Countdown Calendar: complete with activity stickers to help you find joy and build anticipation throughout December.
Pick up both resources at church on Sunday.
Join us this Advent as we worship, learn, and celebrate the Christ of Christmas — the One who has come and who is coming again.
