4 Tips for Family Worship
These tips will help your family engage meaningfully in worship together and continue growing in faith at home.
1. Be Prepared for Sunday Morning
A smooth Sunday morning often begins the night before. Taking a few simple steps ahead of time can help your child feel ready and know what to expect.
Lay out clothes and shoes the night before, and gather anything you’ll need (Bible, quiet activities like coloring books and crayons, bag, etc.).
Keep the morning simple with an easy breakfast and plan to leave the house early to avoid rushing.
2. Be a Role Model
Remind your children of expectations during the worship service
Use the restroom before the service begins
Sit together as a family because your presence beside your children teaches them what it looks like to worship respectfully and attentively alongside others.
Set gentle behavior expectations by reminding your child that we want to be respectful toward God and the worshipers around us.
Pray with your child before the service starts
3. Assist Your Child During the Service
Help your child stay engaged by offering gentle support throughout the service.
Give quiet reminders if they become distracted or begin talking.
Encourage them to follow along in their Bible and sing with the words on the screen. If they can’t read yet, encourage them to listen carefully and participate as they are able.
Encourage active listening by inviting them to draw pictures of what they hear, write down key words, or take simple notes during the sermon. Provide them with the quiet activities you brought from home.
4. Continue the Conversation
After the service, keep the conversation going in the car and at home.
Look over their notes or drawings and ask what stood out to them. Ask if they had questions about what they heard.
Ask simple follow-up questions about what they heard and understood.
Share with your child about what stood out to you, or what you learned from the service.
Pray together for your entire family to continue growing in faith.
